STEM Camp

STEM Camp 2019
Monday, August 5 - Friday, August 9
9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. | Mulroy Hall
Tuition: $325

The Southwest YMCA is proud to partner with Onondaga Community College to continue bringing STEM Camp to our community!  STEM Camp focuses on science, technology, engineering and mathematics with a half-day spent in the classroom setting and a half-day spent exploring STEM applications in industrial settings.

Registration is now OPEN! This program is available to high school students entering grades 8-12. New to STEM Camp 2019: the DRONE Program!

In the classroom, students will learn the LEGO® MINDSTORMS® EV3 robotics programming software. The EV3 Intelligent Brick makes it possible to control motors, collect sensor feedback, and enables Bluetooth and Wi-Fi communication, programming, and data logging. Students will work in teams to design a robot and then assemble it using motors, sensors, gears, wheels and axles, and other technical components. Students solve problems and gain practical, hands-on experience using mathematical concepts, such as estimating and measuring distance, time and speed.

The second part of STEM Camp consists of daily field tips to local companies that incorporate science, technology, engineering or math into their organizational operations. Previous corporate partners have included: Lockheed Martin, National Grid, Schneider Packaging and Equipment, Welch Allyn, Time Warner Cable, Byrne Dairy, St. Joseph’s Hospital, The Post-Standard, Onondaga County Sherif’s Bomb Squad, SRC, TWC News, and SALT Makerspace.

NOTE: Students will be required to wear long pants and closed-toe shoes for the field tips, and should be prepared to walk distances and climb stairs. Certain tours require wearing special safety equipment and are conducted in tight spaces.  A photo ID may be required at field tip sites.
