Because we're “more than a gym” we’ve continued to provide child care, residential services, arts programming, camp, and more throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. We’re here to serve our community when we’re needed.

And now we’re offering additional opportunities to our members with limited programming including lap swim in our pools, outdoor group exercise classes, and our outdoor running programs. These programs will be available by reservation only.

Facility access

  • Access restricted to YMCA of Central New York members.
  • No guests or nationwide members will be allowed.
  • Children under the age of 16 may not be alone in our facilities at this time.
  • Anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian over the age of 18.
  • Access will only be granted to the individual(s) who has made the reservation.

Based on information and mandates from our state and regional officials, our original full facility reopening date for our YMCA branches has been postponed. It’s our goal to reopen safely for our community and we’ll let you know as soon as we know more.


The information below will not apply until after we are given permission to fully open by our state and local authorities.



We'll be moving through a series of stages as we reopen to make sure we're serving our community safely. We expect our first stage to last for approximately 30 days, at which time we'll assess the safety of moving forward.

The information below is subject to change at any time as we make decisions about our programs and spaces based on any new information from our local health officials.

What Amenities Will Be Available?

We're implementing the following safety protocols to ensure the health and safety of our members, program participants, and staff. Additional procedures or restrictions may be in place at your local branch based on the ability to physically distance and meet required guidelines.

Stage 1 - First 30 days

What areas will be closed or restricted right now?

Closed areas

  • All group exercise rooms.
  • Steam rooms, saunas, whirlpools.
  • Gyms are closed to self-organized group activities (pick-up basketball, etc.).
  • Beach volleyball courts.
  • Racquetball courts (only open at North Area Family YMCA - reservation required)

Restricted activities and programs

  • All group activities in facilities are closed including all group exercise classes, swim lessons, water aerobics, swim team, Active Older Adults programming, Boot Camp, sports, etc.
  • All programs are closed including youth sports and all outreach/community programs.
  • Traditional circuit training prohibited (individuals may only use one piece of equipment at a time).

Additional restrictions

  • Drop-in child watch (Prime Time) will not be available during the first 30 days. This is subject to change.
  • Coffee services are temporarily suspended.
  • Towel services currently only available at the Downtown YMCA.
What areas and services will be open?

Open areas, with restrictions

  • Cardio and strength areas will be open with significant restrictions on capacity and activities.
  • Designated bathrooms will be open.
  • Gym open for individual workouts only. No self-organized group activity (pick-up basketball, etc.)
  • Locker rooms and showers will have limited availability per branch, based on the ability to socially distance (more information to follow).

Additional areas with restrictions

  • Seating areas will be significantly reduced to prevent gathering.
  • Tennis at Manlius YMCA is available by reservation system. Limited to members and private lessons only.
  • Racquetball courts are only open at North Area Family YMCA - reservation required.
  • Reservations will be required for indoor and outdoor pools. More information to follow.

Summer Camp

Will I need to make reservations?

YMCA members will be able to make reservations for the following areas when the programming is available:

  • Aquatics - individual reservations only
  • Gymnasium (Basketball, Turf and Sport Courts) - individual or household reservations only
  • Group Exercise
  • Family Prime Time
What are your cleaning protocols?

All YMCA locations have been and will continue to be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.

You can expect:

  • Stringent sanitation protocols for proper disinfection, operation, and maintenance to continue to be followed.  
  • Continuous scheduled disinfection of high-touch surfaces throughout the YMCA.
  • Facility hours to be adjusted to allow for deep cleaning during the day.
  • Staff to receive ongoing training on cleaning protocols.
  • Easy, readily-available equipment disinfectant spray for you use.
  • Hand-sanitizing stations conveniently located for you to use throughout the Y. 
What else can I expect?
  • Self-scan upon entry (staff will not handle cards, phones, or any other personal belongings of members).
  • Bring your own mats and towels, along with your mask!
  • Bring a water bottle - only bottle fillers are available at this time. Drinking fountains are closed.

Help Us All Stay Safe

Safe Environment

All staff will be screened before every shift to ensure a safe work environment.

Wipe Down Equipment

Use the cleaning materials provided. Wipe equipment before and after your workout.

Keep Your Distance

Stay at least six feet away from others wherever possible.

Wear Your Mask

Masks are required to be worn except when engaged in physical activity. This policy is subject to change if requirements are mandated.

Expect Reduced Capacity

Reservations may be required to meet capacity guidelines.

Stay Home If You're Sick

CDC and state guidelines encourage you to stay home if you're not feeling well. We'll be here when you're feeling better.

Temporary Access Restrictions

There will be no Prime Time childcare for the first 30 days of reopening. Children under the age of 16 may not be alone in the facility at this time. This policy is subject to change.
