The Life-Changing Effect of One Number

In many cases here in America, the zip code you're born into may have the ability to determine your future. Sometimes these divisions exist mere miles from each other, in zip codes that are just one number apart.

Make Your Gift to the Y

The YMCA of Greater Syracuse is focused everyday on delivering programs and services that help everyone reach their full potential. We know where you live can affect your education, your success, your health and even your hopes and dreams. At the Y, we believe everyone deserves a chance, no matter who you are or where you’re from.

Our Annual Campaign helps give everyone that chance. Each year, we engage volunteers to help raise the much-needed funding to support our work in Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility.

Our Annual Campaign is about more than just raising money. We're sharing personal and profound stories of how the Y fulfills our promise and impacts our community. These stories lead to generous gifts that ensure the resources of the Y are available to everyone in our community. Gifts of all sizes make a difference in the lives of those we serve.  Make a difference today.

Kamel - Y-Arts Scholars

The Y-Arts Scholars program provides scholarships for talented youth in our community with demonstrated financial need. That’s how we met Kamel, who joined us as a Y-Arts Scholar in 2015, taking private guitar lessons once a week at our Arts Branch in the Downtown YMCA to further his skill set he’d been practicing since the fifth grade. With Kamel’s continuing passion for music, we can expect great things in the future!

“In my family in the past, they’ve all been musicians,” said Kamel. “And now it’s my turn!”

Vincent - Men's Residence

Vincent joined the YMCA Men’s Residence Program less than a year ago after being homeless for a few months prior and battling some mental health issues. The YMCA created a Resident Assistance Plan to provide staff more tools to support Vincent, as well as provide an assurance with him that the YMCA had his best interest in mind, and that he could feel safe here.

Since being at the Y, Vincent has been doing exceptionally well with his mental health challenges and has taken initiative to learn independent living skills, allowing him to pursue new friendships and participate in community events for the first time. He is a great example of the powerful impact the YMCA has on individuals that invest in our programs.

Mari - Camp and Inclusion

Mari was born with a visual disability, and programs like Camp Iroquois seemed out of the question for her. The YMCA was able to provide the additional staff necessary to support Mari this summer and make that a possibility for her through our inclusion program. She made new friends and participated in activities such as archery, kayaking and horseback riding!

Our inclusion program allowed Mari to bond with other children with special needs, and create a unique bond with those around her. Mari is thrilled as to what the future holds for her now. “Camp Iroquois is such a wonderful place. I’m so thankful to be a part of the summer fun, and I can’t wait to return to camp next year!”
