We're the Y

The YMCA of Greater Syracuse is a diverse organization of men, women and children joined by a shared commitment to strengthening the community by nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering social responsibility.

With more than 60,000 members in branches and outreach sites throughout Onondaga County, the Y has the presence and partnerships to deliver lasting personal and social change.

The impact of the Y is seen every day in the faces of our members, volunteers, program participants and staff. Learn more about what we do through their stories!
We can make a difference to an ever-broadening range of people. Thanks to assistive technology, Shannon has been able to return to her passion for writing at our Downtown Writers Center and is working on a series of stories through a weekly creative nonfiction workshop. Shannon has even been able to take notes at times in her own hand and has been encouraged by workshop members to work on a memoir with her aide, Kelly.
Thanks to Membership For All, the Y made belonging easy for Sam and her son, Drake. “The Y has changed us in a positive way. I couldn’t ask for a better place for Drake to learn all of these amazing skills. Not just swimming or basketball, but also how to be a team player and how to make and socialize with friends. I love how the Y has built up his confidence. I couldn’t be prouder of how far he’s come!”

Our YMCA Power Scholars Academy™ tackles the achievement and opportunity gaps facing children from high-poverty areas. Our Director of Education shares that Nasir “always tried her hardest because she has big goals in life. Nasir wrote when she grows up she wants to be a ‘leading, determined woman’.”
